March Newsletter

Welcome to March. I hope you are all enjoying this early spring like weather and taking this opportunity to enjoy the wonderful Kansas outdoors.
I have recently been thinking about the value of a business traveler to our economy. And not just the impact of large meetings and conventions, I have been thinking about the impact of the small meetings and the individual business traveler. As I write this column, I am sitting in a hotel room in a Kansas community preparing for a business meeting later this morning. Since I arrived last night, I have spent money on a hotel room, dinner, a tankful of gas, and because I just realized that I did not put any mascara in my make-up bag, I will be stopping at a local convenience store this morning to make a purchase. My less than 24 hour stay in this community has resulted in Sales Tax and Transient Guest Tax revenues, and has helped to support jobs at least 4 different locations – a hotel, a restaurant, a gas station, and a convenience store.
So often we tend to think about the tourism industry only through the lens of a leisure traveler. But a business traveler, if only in your community for a few hours, is an important source of revenue. And, maybe more importantly, they are potential repeat visitors for the future. Last night, as was heading out to get dinner, I happened upon an interesting looking vintage store that was unfortunately already closed for the evening. So, guess what – it is now on my list for next time I am here in town. I was enticed to come back.
So, my encouragement to you for the month of March is to think about how you are welcoming and enticing business travelers to your community. Are there ways that you can improve the business travelers experience in a way that will bring them back for future visits. How are you making sure the business travelers are aware of all they great things there are to do in your community, whether they enjoy them this visit…or the next. I encourage you to embrace the opportunities business travelers can bring.
Here’s to a great March full of great journeys.
