Sunshine in the Sunflower State

Congrats to the Gypsum Hills Scenic Byway for receiving one of the National Scenic Byway Program Grant Awards.  It's the first time they have been awarded this decade. This project will develop the byway-corridor Memorial Peace Park into a byway corridor rest-area and unique green space on the eastern end of the byway near Medicine Lodge. Funding will assist the applicant with the following activities:

  • Install trailheads and playground equipment at the Five Tribe area and Welcome Center area, and construction of byway informational kiosks at 10 locations
  • Install of ADA benches, lighting and entrance signage at the Intertribal Powwow Grounds and Five Tribes area
  • Trails work, wayfinding, ground prep, tree removal, fencing
  • Handicapped parking spaces and accessibility sidewalks at the west rodeo arena area
  • Install playground equipment, benches, and road work at the west side rodeo arena area
  • Construct the Five Tribes Outdoor Museum Trail and the fees associated with the historical research and tribal experts and scholars
  • Complete the Welcome Center VIP area.
